Step-by-step explanation, learned from visiting aged Sioux women and trial-and-error, of how to tan deer hides. Author says instructions for heavier hides, such as elk and bison, or buffalo, are basically the same. Explains various problems one might encounter, such as shrinking and toughness, and how to overcome them.

This old brain-tanning method has been taught to the many Lakota and white people alike, at Pine Ridge, South Dakota, as well as numerous other places. The author served as Indian Technical Advisor and made props for \"Dances With Wolves\" and other major films. He instructs college, museum and National Park groups in tanning, quilling, flint knapping and Indian history and culture.

The author writes that on the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation in South Dakota, with a tribal population of 12,000 Oglala Sioux, there are less than ten women who still tan hides the Indian way. So those who learn to brain-tan and smoke hides the old Sioux way are keeping an old art alive a little longer.
