The keeper of this diary was the brother of Governor of California George C. Perkins, named David King Perkins. Some of his entries are notations from school in Boston and New York to first hand accounts of the Battle of Mobile Bay while serving on board the USS Seminole.
The leather bound pocket diary measures 3.25 x 6.00 inches.Hand written inside the front cover is “ D.K. Perkins New York Thursday April 28.”Most entries are in pencil with some in ink and are completely legible.
The main diary entries cover from January 1, 1863 to December 30, 1863 with some blank pages in between.
