This is a 19th Century antique porcelain Lithophane / Lithopane. Popular in Europe during the 19th Century lithophanes were originally carved out of bees wax and then a plaster of Paris mould was made and the porcelain slip would have been poured into the mould and left to dry. When back-lit the lithophane crates a three-dimensional picture with great depth and detailing. Popular subjects of the time were reproductions of famous religious art, nature, land and seascapes, historic figures and architecture, and scenes of everyday life. Some are humorous, some are awe-inspiring, all are delightful. European lithophanes were first produced nearly at the same time in France, Germany, Prussia, and England around the later part of the 1820s. They functioned as candle shields, night lights, lampshades, fire screens, tea warmers and sometimes in German Beer Steins,and were also hung in windows to catch the lightThis lithophane features a group of poor children begging scraps from a gentleman and his dog deep within the woodland. The lithophane bears the German maker\'s mark \"PPM\" for Prensaich Porzellan Manufactur in Plaue together with the design number \"1127\".
