Very rare and fascinating, original 1868 Document Signed by Andrew Johnson as President (signed with Johnson\'s ink stamp) being a Military Warrant / Appointment Document issued to Lemuel B. Norton, of the 13th Regiment United States Infantry, promoting him to the rank of Captain for \"gallant and meritorious service during the war” at the Battle of Gettysburg.

This beautiful 15 3/4\" by 19 1/4\", engraved Military Commission is printed on vellum and signed by President Andrew Johnson using his official inkstamp. It also signed by John M. Schofield as Secretary of War. While we have handled 15 to 20 Andrew Johnson signed Military Commissions over the past 35+ years, we have never encountered an example that is amazingly well preserved as the Document we have the pleasure to offer here. The Commission is exceptionally clean and crisp, the engravings dark and bold and the inkstamp signature of Andrew Johnson is also dark and bold and beautiful!!

It should be noted that this Presidential Military Commission Document retains its original embossed Seal of the United States which is affixed in the upper left hand quadrant. It is signed by President Johnson with his official inkstamp - Johnson\'s right hand was crippled by injury and the vast majority of the Documents signed during his presidency were signed using a rubber stamp that replicated his signature. The stamp was a binding, legal and formally recognized signature carrying all of the same weight as a hand signature of the President.

The Commission is dated Jube 27th, 1868 and appoints Lemuel B. Norton as \"Captain by Brevet\" (as of March 2nd, 1867). Lemuel Norton was a Chief Signal Officer during the Civil War and was Chief Signal Officer at the Battle of Gettysburg where he was cited for \"Gallant and Meritorious Service\".

Warren County, PA native Lemuel B. Norton (1839-1871) enlisted on June 22, 1861 at the age of 21 as a 1st lieut. and was commissioned into Co. A of the 10th Infantry Regiment of the Pennsylvania State Guard and was later promoted to captain, but left that position when appointed by President Abraham Lincoln to the rank of captain in the Army of Potomac Signal Corps, a military organization pioneered by Maj. Albert J. Meyer. The new group utilized communication tactics and information as a weapon.

Norton served as Chief Signal Officer at the Battle of Gettysburg. He established a complicated line of men at important vantage points near Cemetery Hill, Powers Hill, Culp’s Hill and Little Round Top. He used them to communicate with other generals the positions and movements of enemy troops. His group on Little Round Top forced Longstreet to detour the approach march to his attack on July 2nd. Longstreet rerouted his march to a more concealed route, but failed. The Signal Corps warned Meade of their approach and reinforcements charged toward the flank that narrowly fought off the Confederates. In addition to his men, he had field telegraph trains he chose not to deploy.

Norton was recognized for \"Gallant and Meritorious Service\" in the Battle of Gettysburg, for \"Meritorious Service\" in the Signal Corps during the war, and for \"Meritorious Service\" in the Campaign against Richmond, VA. He continued his service after the war. Norton died in Philadelphia, PA, in December 1871 of pulmonary tuberculosis as a result of military exposure.

This outstanding Andrew Johnson Signed Military Commission is stunningly beautiful and in excellent++ condition. The elaborate engravings are dark, strong and bold without even a hint of fading. The Document retains its original, blue paper, affixed seal in the upper left hand quadrant. The inkstamp signature of Andrew Johnson is large, dark, bold and beautiful. The signature of Secretary of War John M. Schofield is also dark, bold and very attractive. The sheet is exceptionally clean and crisp and stunningly beautiful with the usual horizontal and vertical creases.

The inkstamp signature of President Andrew Johnson and the Document are unconditionally guaranteed authentic and original and the Signature is unconditionally guaranteed to have been executed with the official rubber inkstamp used to sign the vast majority of official Andrew Johnson Presidential Documents. The Document and Signature are backed by our “no questions asked” return policy and lifetime guarantee of authenticity and the Document will be accompanied by our own Letter of Authenticity with a statement of our unconditional return policy and guarantee of authenticity.
