During the Civil War, Rockwell first served asan aide to General Don Carlos Buell. He participated in the federal occupationof Nashville, Tennessee, fought in the battles of Shiloh and Corinth, Miss.,the campaigns in northern Alabama, and the pursuit of Confederate Gen. BraxtonBragg in Kentucky. An avid diarist, he reported on his conversation withPresident Garfield shortly before the latter\'s death, and described the deathof Abraham Lincoln, where he was also present!

Note that President Garfield appointed his close friend Rockwellto the post of Superintendent of Public Buildings and Grounds in Washington,D.C.!!
