Each of these late 1700s-early 1800s heads is hand carved from a single chunk of European walnut and measures (app.) 9 ¼” x 8” x 5”. They have great depth and deeply rendered details under a CRUSTY, waxed and worn surface of grime and finish. The tops of their heads are quite flat suggesting they were architectural corbels…perhaps in choir benches? …and would make excellent wall shelves if desired. As the photos show, they have evidence of old (inactive) insect damage which has not compromised their strength. You will also note old nail holes and new hanging holes in the back as well as edge wear and rubs.
