This sale is for a pair of antique Qing Chinese porcelain ginger jarsin the highly prized mille fleur (thousand flowers) design. Both ginger jars are marked as CHINA and also have a four character iron period mark onthe bottoms. They were probably made in the late Qing Dynasty around 1880 - 1911. The mille fleur ginger jars could have been made for export or use in China.
The background is white and is covered in flowers of green, red, pink, blue, teal, lavender and yellow all over the jars & maching lids. The design, workmanship and colors are wonderful. I purchased the ginger jars many years ago from the personal collection of a third generation Asian antique dealer and collector in California. He was very fond of the millefleur antiques and I was able to purchase several from his collection.
The mille fleur design symbolizes \"all flower bestow their blessings\" and first appeared in Chinese art in the late Yongzheng period. This lovely design has remained very popular to the present day. The design incorporates amass of flowers (peonies, chrysathemums, hibiscus, morning glory, roses, lotus and more) in an abundance of foliage. The backgrounds were usually white, black or gold.
The two ginger jars are in excellent antique condition with expected normal use. There are no chips, cracks, repairs or damage. There could be surface scratches and a little bit of paint loss. The insides of the ginger jars and lids are unstained. There arecommon characteristics of old porcelain present such are tiny pit marks.
A matching pair of vintage Chinese carved wooden stands are included in the sale but are not original to the jars. The stands each have four fancy carved legs that extend above the flat display area and frame the ginger jars beautifully. The stain is a medium brown which looks lovely with the many flowers painted on the porcelain. Overall, the stands are in excellent vintage condition with expected wear from use. There are surface scratches, spots of uneven glaze and a few rub marks. The legs are securely attached so the stands support the weight of the ginger jars nicely. The inside of the carved legs is not completely covered in the brown stain but is only noticeable on close inspection.
