Really cool bookends depicting skulls atop old books.
These were electro-formed (more commonly known as bronze-clad), a manufacturing technique whereby a skin of bronze was made to adhere to a plaster statue through the chemical process of electro-plating. A handful of companies in the early 1900\'s used this method to produce decorative household objects that had the look, feel and heft of solid bronze pieces while still being affordable by the middle class.Armor Bronze was one of those companies. Even better, original labels still affixed to the bottoms. These labels say New York City, which dates the pieces to no later than the early \'30s, at which time Armor relocated to Taunton, MA and changed those labels.
Condition is very good, no breaks in the cladding, nothing dented, no mashed corners. The paint is original on both pieces.
These stand 5 1/4 inches tall; base is 5 inches by 3 3/4 inches. Weigh just shy of 3 pounds EACH PIECE.
This is a rarely seen set and despite the occasional paint flake, which actually kind of adds to the look of age, it is in unusually good condition. Perfect gift for the medical professional or obscure collector in your family.
