Pair Vintage Wood Christmas Swedish Tomte Gnomes Santa These little wooden figures are Tomte from Sweden. In Swedish folk-lore Tomte are small gnome-like figures with conical red caps who live on farms and act as guardians and helpers if treated kindly, or mischief makers if insulted. They are also known as Santa-like figures that bring gifts to people\'s doors at Christmas. They are traditionally male, but one of these little figures is female. Both figures are made of wood and have red cloth caps. Soft fibers make up the male\'s beard and hair, which entirely covers his body. The female\'s has is coarser and more straw-like. The female is 4 1/2 inches tall, and the male 3 3/4. The wooden faces have both darkened, and the black shoes faded. The male\'s hair is soiled at the bottom, and the female\'s looks as if it was once braid. The cloth on both is starting to fray. These probably date from the 1950\'s. Special despite the wear!
