From Fabs and Faves ...
Pair of Framed Rare Antique Lithographs, 18th Century Hamilton “Months of the Year” Series, May & December, Sydney Lucas Prints 1930\'s
These beautiful and rare antique color printed lithographs (circa 1930’s) from Sydney Lucas Company are from etchings originally engraved by Francesco Bartolozzi (1727-1815) after the 18th Century series of twelve colored paintings, “Months of the Year”, by William Hamilton (1751-1801).
“May”, as shown 1st listing photo, depicts a country scene in which young men appeal to a pair of young women to join them at the village fair where other young people can be seen dancing around a May pole next to the village church.
“December”, 3rd photo, features a scene of young men and women (possibly barmaids) warming themselves beside a large stone fireplace where they appear to be drinking and dancing (with a little romancing).
I acquired these in the 1970\'s, but at that time there was no Internet like there is today.... And until now I really never knew any details about their history or the artists involved. You can learn more about these prints on the Darvill\'s rare Prints Website. Please excuse any glare on the glass and use the zoom feature to view much larger photos. As you will see, these lithographs are in excellent condition, very clean, no stains, tears or apparent damage. The printed area measures approximately 4\" wide & 5\" high. The ready to hang custom made gilded gold and silvered frames, which include glass, are also in excellent vintage condition. Very well made and sturdy. They measure 5 7/8\" wide & 7 3/4\" high. The frames are a little scuffed in places, with the wood showing through the gold ... which only adds to their charm. Please see all photos!!

William Hamilton was a Scottish-born artist who migrated to New York where he was an immediate success; primarily a portraitist he also painted landscapes and illustrated books; born Chelsea (1751), died Cornwall-on Hudson, New York (1801).
Francesco Bartolozzi, the son of a Florentine goldsmith, was born in Florence in 1727, and he died in Lisbon in 1815. He studied at the Academy in Florence, then went to Rome and Venice where he entered the studio of the master engraver, Joseph Wagner. Bartolozzi perfected a technique of stipple engraving in the crayon manner that was especially fine in replicating chalk drawings of Renaissance and Baroque artists.
In the 1920’s - Sydney Lucas arrived in New York City via Paris and founded “The Paris Etching Society” and Camilla Lucas Publishing company. During his career, Sydney brought art into the homes through his lithographs, etchings, serigraphs, woodblock prints, restrikes and reproductions.
