Description
Thislisting is fora dated 1880 French pair of antique two color gilt bronze and marble based signed candelabra. These again are very large. They measure 31 inches or 79 cm high. Both candelabra are dated twice on the bottom, in the bronze and on the marble base "1880".
The bronze is finished in both chocolate brown and fire gilt patinas. The center section has as it\'s decoration on both sides a bas-relief scene of swallows flying through a landscape of plants. This bottle shape base has gilt gold ormolu foliate shaped bronze handles. This bottle form ends in the branching five light candelabra and finial all in their original gold ormolu finish. The candle cups are covered in floral devices including a meandering vine around each cup. Each of the ten candle cups have their original bobeches. The finial are four foliate seed pods about to burst. All of this sits on a spreading rouge marble and bronze base with winged animal paw foot feet.
The bronze is signed by the artist "HENRY CAHIEUX" and the most notable bronze foundry of the period"BARBEDIENNE FOUNDEUR". Henry Cahieux showed his works in the Paris Salon and always had his bronzes cast by Barbedienne.
As you can see by the many photographs these are very impressive. The condition overall is excellent. There is no damage either to the bronze or the marble. All of the gold ormolu finish is original and not re-gilded. The chocolate brown bronze sections of the candelabra have some minor finish variations and one has some staining to the bas relief near the birds on the back side only. A rarely seen desirable pair by this artist, there is .
