Pair of Vintage (\'50\'s) Dorothy Oxborough \'First Nations Children\' Art Prints:
$5.00

On offer are a pair of two vintage Dorothy Oxborough art prints. The image portion of each of these large prints measures 15\" x 20\" ( 38 x 51 cm.). Both are in very good condition and are on very high quality art paper. (See condition notes above.)
The girl print is marked along the bottom edge \" Papoose Number 1. Lithographed in Canada by Agency Press Limited for Canadian Native Prints Ltd. 837 W. Hastings St., Vancouver 1. B.C.\" There is no similar marking below the boy.The girl and boy, are drawn in the style of the \'big eye children\' so popular in the \'50\'s.
Oxborough worked mainly in pastels. Born in 1922, she grew up in Banff, Alberta one of three children of parents who always supported her artistic endeavours. Her father gave Dorothy her first set of pastels ( a 100 piece set that he\'d rescued from a fire) and her mother ran a successful gift/craft shop in Banff called \'Banff Home Industries\' where Dorothy got to meet legendary western artists such as Walter Phillips, H.G. Clyde, Roland Gissing, Peter and Catherine Whyte and Nicholas de Grandmaison. It was de Grandmaison who first encouraged her to try her hand at doing portraits of the local First Nations people, a specialty which he himself had garnered much renown.
Dorothy is apparently still alive and living in Victoria British Columbia. Declining health however has kept her from painting for many years.
These prints are not framed and will be shipped in a hard sided mailing tube.
There are those who say that \"a white woman making pastel drawings of First Nations people, often showing them wearing buckskin and feathers, inevitably leaves herself open to charges of cultural appropriation.\" This line of thought is countered eloquently by critic Robert Amos in a 2005 Victoria Times Colonist article where he writes \" Why put a negative spin on the very positive contributions of Dorothy Oxborough? Oxborough\'s portraiture in pastel is extremely skillful, her drawing is accurate and robust; her colour sense sonorous and complex. Her decision to choose native subjects speaks not of exploitation but of recognition. The men, women and children she depicts, her friends in many cases, embody the character, colour and history which is an undeniable part of their aboriginal heritage.\"
