If you\'re a serious collector of Micronesian art, you\'ll recognize immediately that this storyboard is unusual in a number of ways. There\'s its very large size and weight -- approximately 29.5\" (75cm) wide at its base x 20.5\" (52cm) tall; carved from a single slab of local wood, it weighs in at 18.7 pounds (8.5kg). And there\'s its detail -- the three-dimensional carving is up to 1\" (2.5cm) deep in places. This is very obviously not the mass-produced souvenir typically offered for sale nowadays.I purchased this storyboard from the Koror jail in 1992, where the carver -- Nathani -- was serving time for murder. (And serving time comfortably, I might add -- when I asked to speak with him to negotiate the price, I was directed to a local beach where I found him fishing and drinking beer. I wonder if life in Palau is still as laidback nowadays!)Overall condition of this storyboard is excellent, although it does have a crack (to be expected in a piece of this size and age) on the bottom right. You can see from the pictures that the crack does not extend to the back and so does not threaten the structural integrity of the piece.The carving, as is usual, depicts a local legend. I believe the story is of a wager by a local man, who bet that he could sleep with a woman on another island without leaving home. He accomplished this, and won the bet, as he was -- shall we say -- unbelievably well-endowed.
