Pattern 1831 British General Officer\'s Sword & Scabbard, Crimean Era:
$49.00

British Pattern 1831 General Officer\'s sword, with its original two scabbards. This is an early example as it not only has the leather scabbard with gilt-brass mounts with which this pattern was originally introduced, but also the all-brass scabbard which soon after replaced it. I\'ve never come across another example of this sword with both types of scabbard, and to find one like this is extremely rare, and also puts it nicely in the Crimean period.

The gilt brass hilt is in fine condition, with no knocks or deformation, and has the general\'s \'crossed sword and baton\' motif on both sides of the ecusson. A fair amount of the gilt remains. The off-white grips (you know what they\'re made of!) are very good, with a small repair near the guard on the RH side.

The blade isclean and fairly bright, with some light background staining, and is nicelyetched with the crowned VR cypher of Queen Victoria, a crossed sword and baton, and various foliage motifs. It has the maker\'s/retailer\'s name of \'xxxxxxxxxxxx\'\' etched at the forte, and a proof mark underneath the XX side langet.

The leather scabbard is sound, and the locket and middle mount retain much of their original gilt. The chape (drag) is a later replacement.

The brassscabbard is very good, with a few small dings but the blade fits fine.
