This is an ORIGINAL unused John Chambers created special effects Gorilla character makeup appliance from the PLANET OF THE APES Television series. There have been some questionable appliances, reproductions and the like turn up on , but this is Guaranteed vintage production made. Please read on for the full provenance history.

This piece actually came to me with a little bit of mystery. It was said to be that of Buck Kartalian’s “Julius” from the first film and it does indeed have the BK G initials molded into the reverse (Buck Kartalian Gorilla) The chin piece however was marked with BC G but the paint is an even match…. The appliance is that of a Gorilla with a long scar down his left brow, over the eye and down cheek. What Gorilla had a scar? Could it possibly be for an unused scene showing the character of “Julius” after he got clobbered on the head in the lab cages so Taylor could escape?? It was said to have come directly from Ellis Burman and from the first film, but Ellis only worked on that film 2 days.

Fast forward and I am watching the TV series and up comes the episode THE DECEPTION. Low and behold there is the appliance on actor Pat Renella as “Zon\", a Gorilla commander. (see below for info on the character)

Ellis Burman did indeed work as a makeup artist for the series in 1974. Mystery solved.

To work within budget and scheduling, the makeup department did use existing face castings they could reach for, for the various Television series actors; instead of spending half a day casting and molding the new actors. Buck Kartalian’s face was used in this case.

The appliance is unused and the upper teeth were never painted, although the lower teeth were. The upper part however was ventilated as you can see in the image that shows the back. A section under the nose is channeled out and the mouth area trimmed. This was so that the actor could breathe properly through the appliance via a canal to the mouth. The ventilation was never sculpted into the appliance, which is why some appliances do not have it unless they were used or just about to be used.

** Please NOTE: I have it displayed but not attached to a vacu-formlife castof actor Maurice Evans (Dr Zaius), from the era but more recently made. It has sort of plaque rectangle molded with it. It is not included but I will include a generic face form. I can sell Mauriceseparateif desired. The appliance is currently sound and still somewhat supple (it is not dried out) but still fragile. It should have the support of a facial mold. It is not an exact fit. I was told that a hair dryer carefully used might get an appliance to relax to a face form. I have not tried it. The best thing to do with these appliances, is attach them to a facial type form with double stick toupee tape and then leave it. Care is pretty easy. Keep it clean and free from contact with any liquids or substances and keep it out of the sun. The best thing is to enclose it in a case.

I take great care in assuring that items are protected for shipping. International shipping is trickier, as multiple handlers andCustomsareinvolved. I would likely want to ship by Express Mail in this case.

Thanks!

About the episode and character:

Zon is the second-in-command of Perdix in the local security force. While he outwardly supports Perdix\' insistence that the law should be upheld, he is in fact secretly the leader of the Dragoons, who kill and terrorize the local humans. Perdix does not seem completely surprised to learn that Zon is their leader, but was shocked to learn he was responsible for Lucian\'s death. Eventually, after the Dragoons have given up, Perdix is able to arrest Zon.

He bears a large scar across his left eye.
