Amisos was a rich commercial center under the kings of Pontos, a royal residence and fortress of Mithridates, and was the home of the fabled Amazons. The Kingdom of Pontos was founded after the death of Alexander the Great in 302 BC, south of the Black Sea in modern-day Turkey. It reached its height under Mithradates VI, the king under whom this coin was minted, until he was defeated by the Romans, who took over the region in 64 BC.
