This is an original 1893 steel engraving created for the title page of Baily\'s Magazine of Sports and Pastimes, which is a British periodical dedicated to recreation, hunting and sporting events of the Victorian era in Great Britain.
The subject is Edwin Fownes, the doyen of coaching and driving in England at the time. A coach (or stage coach) is originally a large four wheeled carriage with two or more horses harnessed as a team, controlled by a coachman and/or one or more postilions. It had doors in the sides, with generally a front and a back seat inside and, for the driver, a small, usually elevated seat in front called a box, box seat or coach box.
Condition: The printed area is clean and flat with no marks. Light aging with dim spotting and darkening to the edges. No foxing. The right edge has been trimmed.
