WELCOME TO BEANSANTIQUES

We are offering to you a very rare antique apothecary chest with all that was found in it.

The chest has a label that reads\'

From

Thomas & Maxwell

Late

James S? Aspinwall

druggist & Chemists

No 86 William St

2nd Store Above Maiden Lane

New York

This is a lovely chest that has brass bound sides and corners and a name plate on the top with no monogram. There is a lift up lid and a drawer.

In the top compartment there are about 34 antique bottles and some loose stoppers. Some of the bottles have manes like Tacit of Opium, Iodophen, Cartarrhozone, Crabolated and Syrup of Squills.

There are 5- 12 sided bottled fitted at the back and one of them is cracked. There are chips and general age wear on some of the others but generally all in good shape.

In the drawer there is s surgical scalpel set in a fitted wood box with three scalpels a needle and another tool that is marked W H Horn & Bro

Also in the drawer are a few newer items that must have been added much later. Dodds Kidney Pills, Nerviline, a druggists bottle from Aylesford NS, a Rigo Eye Pipette and a druggists box.

All of the bottles are empty save a small few.

There is what looks like a small piece of wood missing at the bottom front (under the drawer) but it does not effect the piece. The lock in the lid has been pulled out at some point and is attached to the lock

In good antique shape with normal age wear. It has a blue silk? liner in the lid that has come apart and is covered with plastic paper to hold it in. The box is about 12.5\" x 8.5\" and is 9\" tall with the lid closed.

Please use the zoom on the photos to grade this great item. It is an antique and not perfect. Sold the way you see it.

Just a fine Pre Civil War Doctor\'s apothecary chest.

We found this small bit of info about the company on-line.

Bought of James S. Aspinwall, druggist, 86 William Street. Formerly, Rushton & Aspinwall, 1830, Thomas & Maxwell, 1847, [formerly] J. T. Maxwell, 1855. – The Library Company of Philadelphia, May 22, 1862

That would make the name on this case/label date from 1847 to 1855 as far as I can see.

The wood the box is made from looks to be Rosewood or maybe mahogany and looks like it was re-stained lightly at some point
