This Presidentialcommission signed February 4, 1886 is for 9th Calvary Lt James W. Benton.Lt. James WatsonBenton graduated with his West Point class June 14, 1885 and was assigned as a Second Lieutenant to the Ninth Cavalry, with which his regiment he served until his death. Promoted First Lieutenant March 22, 1892 and appointed Regimental Quartermaster April 12, 1905. He participated in the Sword Bearercampaign of 1890-1891. He died suddenly at Hot Springs, South Dakota, of heart failure, September 2, 1896 and was buried at West Point.He was the son of revered Army officer Col. James Gilchrist Benton who was my great, great grandfather.This commission is in good/very good non faded condition.
It has been kept folded in a box by my family out of the sunlight.
Throughout, over one hundred plus years, I can not state this has been in a smoke-free Environment. There are no holes or tears. There arefold lineswith clear and non faded signatures.
