Description

Boldly-penned Autograph Letter Signed (ALS), \"J. Q. Adams\", one page, 6.5\'\' x 7.75\'\', Sep. 11, 1830, Quincy. Letter to Adams\' son Charles Francis Adams, Sr. enclosing a Power of Attorney. In Fine condition, with scattered smudges of ink from Adams\' bold penmanship. Letter is accompanied by a beatiful engraving (measuring 6.5\'\' x 8.5\'\') of John Quincy Adams by J. B. Longacre. Engraving is in Very Good condition, with scattered soiling throughout. This is a beautifully penned letter from John Quincy Adams during his brief, two-year retirement in Quincy, Massachusetts following his term as President. This letter shows a strong, affectionate bond between Adams and his son Charles Francis Adams, Sr. Less than one week after this letter was written (according to his diary) Adams would begin exploring the possibility of a candidacy for the House of Representatives. Of course, Adams would go on to serve nine terms in the House of Representatives, one of only two Presidents to return to Congress after serving as President (Andrew Johnson also served in the Senate after his presidency). John Quincy Adams (July 11, 1767 – February 23, 1848) was an American statesman who served as the sixth President of the United States from 1825 to 1829. He also served as a diplomat, a Senator and member of the House of Representatives. He was a member of the Federalist, Democratic-Republican, National Republican, and later Anti-Masonic and Whig parties. Charles Francis Adams, Sr. (August 18, 1807 – November 21, 1886) was an American historical editor, politician and diplomat. He was the son of President John Quincy Adams and grandson of President John Adams. Adams ran unsuccessfully for Vice-President (Free Soil Party) in the election of 1848. He later served two terms in U.S. House of Representatives, before being called upon as Lincoln’s foreign minister to England during the Civil War.
