Ulysses S. Grant - War Dated Autograph Leter Signed
Autograph letter written less than two weeks after Grant was promoted to Lieutenant General and Supreme Commander of the Union Autograph Letter Signed (ALS) signed “U. S. Grant, Lt. Gen.,” one page, 7.75’’ x 9.75’’, March 14, 1864, Louisville, KY. Letter, written to Major General Steele, commander of the Arkansas Department, introducing him to letter’s bearer, Thompson Dean. In Fine condition, with mailing folds (one of which crosses through a single letter of Grant’s signature), and some scattered soiling.Incredibly, this is one of Grant’s very first letters penned after being appointed Lieutenant General by President Abraham Lincoln on March 1st! According to “The Papers of Ulysses S. Grant: January 1-May 31, 1864”, Grant gave a speech on March 9th accepting the nomination from President Lincoln. According to the Papers, Grant first used his new military rank on a letter dated March 10th. This letter was written just four days letter, and is almost certainly one of the earliest letters written as Lieutenant General in private hands. You can find reference to this particular letter on page 206 of “The Papers of Ulysses S. Grant: January 1-May 31, 1864”.Thompson Dean, a pioneer merchant and capitalist, and at one time one of the most famous steamboat men of Ohio and Mississippi, was born on April 23, 1814 in Schoharie County, New York and died on April 16, 1896. According to a biography of Thompson Dean, Dean and Grant first met in 1863 when one of Dean’s steamer boats had been improperly seized by Union officers and pressed into service. Upon learning of this, General Grant gave an order to his staff that under no circumstances should Mr. Dean’s boats be interfered with again. According to the biography, this began a long and enduring friendship between Dean and Granted that continued through his Presidency.
