Price Reduced! Antique (1800s) Iron Hewing Hatchet w/ Hammer Nail claw Hand Axe

A primitive, heavy-duty, hatchet with iron hewing axe head and poll hammer with nail claw. This is a unique, unmarked hatchet with hand crafted and imperfect features (see images). The hand forged, hatchet head has a rockaway, hewing shape. The head features a rounded, broad cutting edge that tapers to notches at the eye. The poll of the head is a flat rectangular block that features a downturned nail claw (see images). The claws were made somewhat uneven but the claw is very effective and each claw measures 5/8\" long and it has a 1/4\" tapered gap (see images). The head measures 6\" L x 3 3/8\" W (at cutting edge) x 1 1/8\" D (at poll or butt). The iron on this piece is in good condition with some surface oxidation that could be easily removed with cleaning and routine maintenance. The cutting edge of the hatchet has no chips or dents. The hard wood handle measures 13 5/8\" in length and appears to be original (see images). The handle is worn with vintage tape and cracks but it is in one piece and securely fastened into the eye of the hatchet head (see images). The piece weighs 1 lb 13 oz. This hatchet was recently acquired from a barn at an estate sale in rural Kansas. It is original, not cleaned, it maintains a patina with grime, and some areas of surface oxidation throughout (see images). A great, unique hatchet that will accent any rustic or industrial decor and enhance any tool collection.
