By Joseph D. Whitaker February 5, 1989

Gary Clayton Wade, 33, a Baltimore artist and Washington native who specialized in making paper, wire and glue masks and full-size sculptures of the rich and famous, was killed Feb. 3 in an automobile accident in Northeast Washington. A D.C. police spokesman said Mr. Wade was killed when the car in which he was riding was struck by another car at 34th Street and Benning Road. The driver, a 33-year-old Washington man, was critically injured in the crash. A 27-year-old Washington man who was driving the second vehicle was charged with driving at unreasonable speed and with running a red light. A self-taught artist, Mr. Wade made his first celebrity sculpture in 1981 when his sister-in-law asked him to make a Miss Piggy costume for her daughter to wear on Halloween night. He later made masks and sold them for use in local plays and for Halloween. Over the last seven years, he had made scores of masks and full-size sculptures of such personalities as Phil Donahue, Oprah Winfrey, President Reagan, Richard Nixon, Cab Calloway, Marion Barry, Sugar Ray Leonard and Whoopi Goldberg. Most of his pieces had been autographed by their human counterparts. One of his favorite works was a life-size statue of Michael Jackson made in 1984. He took the sculpture to New York City when Jackson was appearing at Madison Square Garden on his Victory Tour. In news accounts later, Mr. Wade said the Jackson statue was delivered to the singer\'s hotel room by a bodyguard. Mr. Wade returned to Washington several days later with the statue, with the superstar\'s autograph on the upper leg of the the figure\'s light blue denim pants. In addition to his work as an artist, Mr. Wade had been a paper hanger, painter, interior decorator and driving school instructor. He moved to Baltimore in 1984. Mr. Wade graduated from McKinley Technical High School and had studied art at the University of the District of Columbia and The Corcoran School of Art.
