$374.00

This buckle was made by Bernard Dawahoya (morebelow); in 1989 he was designated as an ArizonaIndian Living Treasure (AILT). Bernard died on February 18, 2010.

I could probably list this buckle as new. After it waspurchased at The Heard Museum in Phoenix almost 30 years ago it was put into adrawer and was never worn or used.

Buckle Dimensions: about2 3/8 inches by nearly 1 ½ inches

Fits Belt: 1 inch wide making it perfect to wear with a suit ora pair of jeans.

Weight: 32.4 grams

Marks: Theback of the buckle is stamped twice with Bernard\'s cloud hallmark. Although the buckle is not marked for silvercontent it tests as at least coin silver (900) and is probably sterling (925).

Condition: This buckle is in excellent condition and is from mypersonal collection of Native American items.

Be sure to check thepictures as they are part of the description and please ask any questions youhave prior to offerding.

BernardDawahoya began working with silver in 1956. He learned from his uncles, the HopiSilvercraft Guild, and was one of the original silversmiths hired by HopiEnterprise who soon changed their name to Hopicrafts. Eventually he worked for himself.

He is a legendary artisanwho was a force in the evolution of Hopi overlay jewelry and was a teacher ofmany other great artists. One referenceI use had him down for over 30 awards in major shows; only 4 for 3rd place. His work is included in many museumcollections including Harvard University\'s Peabody Museum and the HeardMuseum. Bernard died on February 18, 2010.

Bernard was a Hopi man and respected the Hopi past and present. His work used representative designs for manythings including wind, sun, and rain.
