ITEM DESCRIPTION: U.S. 1173 tied by “U.S.S. Randolph (CVS-15), Feb. 20, P.M. 1962” to UC26 entire inscribed “PROJECT MERCURY, Via Helicopter from Destroyer :NOA” to Carrier RANDOLPH From Capsule to Carried 20 Feb. 1962, [singed] Major W. O Nelson, Pilot, ET-57” Absolutely genuine, ex- Roberts Collection. A similar cover was sold in a 2006 Regency Spuerior sale for $500.00. Project Mercury was the United States’ first orbital space flight made by Lt. Col John Glenn. The space capsule was recovered by the U.S.S. Noa and Lt. Col. Glenn was then flown by helicopter to the aircraft carrier U.S.S. Randolph. regarding backdating of the USS Randolph covers, and it is likely that 1500 of these were produced. RARE early U.S. space flight cover.
