BRANSTONVIOLET RAY

Very Interesting Quack (?) Medical Device

The following description is from Wikipedia:

*******************************

A Violet ray is an antique medical device used in electrotherapy. Their construction usually features a combination of a disruptive discharge coil with an interrupter to apply a high voltage, high frequency, and low current to the human body for therapeutic purposes.Their basic construction was invented by Nikola Tesla prior to 1900, who introduced their first prototypes at the World's Columbian Exposition in 1893. Most of the antique violet rays in the US were produced before the Depression era and some of the larger US manufacturers of violet rays were Renulife, Fitzgerald and Fisher. Companies who manufactured violet ray devices, made many other types of electrical appliances as well, e.g. Star Electric, which also manufactured stock ticker machines. Many of the companies who were able to continue manufacturing violet rays after the depression, stopped making them due to World War II when they began manufacturing radio coils or other electrical components for the war instead.

A typical violet ray device consisted of an ungrounded electrical control box that controlled the interrupter and which housed the magneto coil, and an attached bakelite or other handle housing which contained the high voltage coil and an insertion port for attachments. Glass evacuated tubes of varying shapes and for different therapeutic uses could be inserted into the bakelite handle to apply the resulting current to different parts of the body.

In its' heyday violet ray treatments were said to cure everything from lumbago to carbuncles. Some users considered it a sexual aid. From an antique Master Violet Ray manual c. 1920 comes this treatment advice: Brain Fog - Use Applicator No. I over forehead and eyes. Also treat the back of head and neck with strong current in direct contact with the skin. Treat the spine and hold the electrode in the hand. Ozone inhalations for about four minutes are also of importance.

It is incumbent on us to state that the efficacy, safety or wisdom of using a Violet Ray for the purposes for which it was intended (or anyspecific application for that matter) is something on whichwe have no knowledge and on whichwe cannot comment. We are offering this device for saleas a historical artifactwitha significant place in the development of electrotherapies. Buyers considering its' actual usedo so at their ownrisk. As an antique electrical device almost 100 years oldViolet Ray devicesmay not meet modern electrical codes and practices and Buyers should ensure they are sufficiently knowledgeable if they intend to energize and operate the device.Violet Ray devicesmay also not meet modern medical standards and again Buyers should understand therisksthat have been identified with its' use.

This particular machine isone of themost complete of the12 deviceswe acquired from a collector of medical equipment. It has5 of the glasselectrodes (most have2 or3 at most).Since we do not have the original documentation that came with the Branston machine we are providing a Renulife (different manufacturer) manual as both machines are very similar and the information can provide at least the basics of what these machines wereintended for. It is not the manual written for this machine and the specifics may well be different. It includes directions for both users and physicians and a complete inventory of glasselectrodes that were available at the time with their intended uses..

If youare the winning buyer:We take PayPal(or cashif local pick-up).Payment is due within 24 hoursof offer close. We ship within 3 business days. Due to the exceptional fragility of the glass electrodes packing requires an additional handling (packing) charge of $35. Include this if you instant pay. Invoice will be sent showing this charge as well. These cannot be replaced if broken so special efforts must be made to protect them. calculations of $22 for shipping would not cover shipping to New York ($49) so shipping will be dependent on your location. Returns can be made forphysical defects within 14 days from the date of delivery however given the nature of the device its failure to meet original specifications or to performas claimed by the manufacturerare not guaranteed. It is after all almost 100 years old and its' function, even when new, wasa matter of controversy. Return shipping and insuranceto bepaid by Buyer (valuation of $475 required).Returns must be in original condition and in original shipping materials. Please examine photos carefully as they are high resolution and should provide a good idea of physical condition. Incidentally we are constantly purchasing antique devices of this kind from individuals or collectors so you may want to put us on your favorite Sellers list so you can check back from time to time. We buy individual pieces or collections as they come available so it is difficult to give exact dates as to when they will be listed.

Thanks for checking us out. Hope to have you back again soon.
