First of all as you probably know this spoon isn’t sterling (.925 fine) but is the better Britannia Standard (.958 fine). The date is 1711-12. The maker is the famous Huguenot silversmith David Willaume I, 1658-1741. It is engraved with the original weight 6 troy oz 7 dwt  now weighs 6 oz 4.2 dwt due to normal wear.

The engraved crest is a half image of a man with a beard and a Scottish cap holding an ox yoke over his right shoulder the crest of the Hay family in Balhousie or Leys Scotland. It might have belonged to John Hay, 2nd Marquess  of Tweeddale (1645 – 20 April 1713) who was a representative peer after the union of England and Scotland in 1707.  Which would explain the crown which is either a baron’s or that of a lord of Parliament in the Scots peerage.

The spoon is a good size 13 1/4” good weight 193.2 gm. The marks are good, all recognizable although the maker’s mark is not 100% complete. I would say the condition is very good with expected wear, but in no way excessive, and normal patina.

Pricing: we sell the average Georgian stuffing spoon for under $150. Queen Anne spoons are a different story. If you check sale records you will find quite a few have brought more, and those that bring much less always have some problem, illegible marks etc. The works of David Willaume I are much sought after as much for the famous owners as for the quality of his work. To trace a crest on a spoon back to the original owner is an added prize. When added all together we believe the price is actually very reasonable, and we hope some knowledgeable buyers find this listing.

I wrote a little article for the March 2018 ASCAS newsletter on the crest. It can be viewed on line.

If you are interested in unusual stuffing spoons, this is not necessarily our rarest.

We also have an unusual French one and another from Augsburg listed.
