More than 66 million years ago, a shallow inland sea known as theWestern Interior Seaway covered the centre of the North American continent,stretching from the Arctic Ocean to the Gulf of Mexico. The Eastern and westernshores of this sea were lined with plains that gave way to hilly highlands inthe East and the volcanic beginnings of the Rocky Mountains in the West.
