TWO RARE 17TH 18TH CENTURY FRENCH CHATEAU PELMETS VALANCESNOBILITY HERALDIC CRESTED PELMETS WITH FLEUR DE LYS
This is sale is for two extremely rare 17th 18th century or earlier French nobility, gentry chateau pelmets / valances.
They are emblazoned in relief embroidery with the French fleur de lys and a central heraldic crest.
The embroidery is in metallic thread onto a red silk velvet with gold passimenterie trim, they are of the highest quality workmanship.The pelmets are lined on the back with a dark red cotton sateen fabric.
These were obviously made for someone of great importance and would have hung in a very grand chateau, maybe around windows, a bed or entrances. Tassles hang between the fleur de lys and these are also made in the same gold metallic covered thread. Some are missing, I have eight tassles which need to be re-attached (I have not shown these in the photos).
The pelmets are lucky to have survived the French Revolution as the fleur de lys represented the French Royalty and were removed or destroyed by 1801.
They are in good strong condition, there is no rot to the material. They need, if required, to have some of the trim re-stitched and as mentioned before the tassles to be re-attached.
There are patches where some of the pile of the velvet is missing in places but what does one expect for something of this age and importance.
