You are offerding on an antique late 18th century early 19th century Mangaia Island/Cook Islands ritual adze shaft. This is the oldest type usually described as being before 1820-1830. The following is an extract from \"Polynesian Art at sale 1965 – 1980\" by Charles W. Mack:

\" There are three chronological styles of these elaborately carved adzes. All three types make use of the K-Form motif found on Mangaian staff gods. The earliest style differs from the ancient prototype in being thicker and longer. The second style type is distinct from the first in having a short carved base. The third type – sometimes called the Eiffel tower type due to the much expanded and pierced pedestal base was popular from the mid 19 th century.\"

This adze is very large indicating good age maybe 18th century it is 10-1/2 inches long, the head is around 4x4 inches and the shaft is 2 inches in diameter. There is very nice patina overall. There are section showing damage some fragments that are missing especially on one side. I took many pictures so most is visible in the pictures. The stone.basalt head and wrapping is missing as visible. A very rare polynesian object. and have fun... and offer high:-)
