Matchlessantiquesis offering collectors this Rare Heavy Duty Wheelwright\'s Tire Bender. In days past, blacksmiths also would make iron tires for wooden wheels. The earliest iron tires were made in sections and nailed onto the rim of the wheel with stake nails. These sections were heated and shaped by hand. The continuous, one-piece metal tire is an American innovation that was quickly accepted here and abroad. In order to facilitate the bending of this tire, the tire bender was devised. As far as can be determined they came onto the market in the second half of the 19th century.

This tire bender is complete, and in good working condition. The bender will make consistent bends out of flat stock. There is an old repair that appears to have withstood the test of time as it\'s still holding. The handle is large enough for a two handed operation. It has one adjustable roller that you can adjust downward as you need to make a tighter bend or different size wheel. There is normal wear on this machine and one tooth is partly chipped on the gears. The rollers are clean and roll easily. The handle is either repaired or not original.
