On the fortieth day after His resurrection from the dead, Christ ascended into Heaven from the Mount of Olives in sight of his disciples. During the Ascension \"two men stood by them in white robes\" and told of the impending Second Coming of Christ. (Mark16, 19; Luke 24, 50-52; Acts 1, 4-12). In this iconic composition the Virgin Mary is depicted in the centre against a background of hills with group of apostles on the sides. The Virgin Mary is not mentioned as being present in the Biblical account of the event and it has been suggested that she functions here as an embodiment of the Christian Church. There is little basic change between variants of this composition - the placing of the figures of the Virgin and the apostles, or the number of apostles may differrent, while sometimes Christ is depicted a second time among the apostles.
