Up for sale --
An original section of cable from the first Transatlantic cable laid by Cyrus W. Field measuring approx. 4 inches. The cable is capped at both ends with brass and around the center is a small plaque that reads “Atlantic Telegraph Cable Guaranteed by Tiffany & Co. Broadway New York, 1858.” The cable is attached to a plexi stand which contains a copy of the letter C. Field wrote saying that the remainder of the cable of the ‘Niagara’ was being given to Tiffany & Co. for re-sale. The Smithsonian owns some of the cable and offers a historical description online.
Provenance: Purchased from the estate of Mr. Joseph Gancie who was a former vice president and director of government relations for ITT (International Telegraph and Telephone) Corp. He was part of the team that worked on the Moscow-Washington hotline.No visible defects. Winning buyer to pay $10.00 ground shipping and handling in the US. US buyers only.
