RARE 1863 U.S GRANTCIVIL WAR CDV PHOTO

Here for those collectors interested in Civil Warphotography is a rarely seen 2 1/2\" by 4\" CDV in great undamaged condition.The subject is that of Major General Ulysses S. Grant.

It was acquired last month from a retired Viet Nam Veteranwho created an extensive collection over many years. He was now unloadingpart of his collection to help the church (half of his proceeds would beinggoing to his church).

Based on a half hour discussion all about his collectionand how it came about I found him to be very informative of the Civil Warperiod photography.

He explained to me that the photo was taken by \"Barr &Young Army Photographers\" probably in 1863. U.S. Grant was in chargeof Union troops at Memphis in 1863 and thus photo taken at Barr & Young\'soriginal studio at Fort Pickering, Memphis, Tenn.. He claims that this photois considered the first military photo taken of him. The back of CDV is totallyblank and thus no backmarks. His explanation of IDing the photographers isbased on the exact same photo found in several of his referencebooks.

This Carte de visite is in excellent condition with mygrade of \"9\" (on a scale of 1 - 10). There is one minor \"flaw\" with a signatureof \"Grant\" lightly written in script. I did not notice it until I was takingthe photos below It is faintly written in pencil in lower left part of CDV.I can\'t believe it is his actual signature and thus it can be easilyerased.

As mentioned previously, this CDV is in great shape andthe following photos should demonstrate such. Aphoto associated with early US CIVIL war history and just waiting for thatserious collector. For it\'s age we feel there are not many available on themarket in such great condition, but please, you be the judge and examine the following photos and determine for yourselfit\'s condition & value.
