Original black leather spines with gold gilt titling, Near Fine spine/binding with only light wear and some chipping to the top of volume II; original black leather covered heavy boards. Front sides with large gilded oval pictures, tinted within gilded decorative borders, lower outer panels with large decorative blind stamped centerpieces within a broad blind tooled decorative borders. All edges gilded. Original white moiré silk limp end papers. 4 unnumbered leaves (versos blank) being family register (births, marriages, deaths) with abundant decorative ornamental black borders (no entries) preceding volume I (Old Testament), 775, 344pp. Printed in double columns with separate pagination to each column. Columns separated by abundant decorative vertical border including illustrations after Christian symbols and symbolism. Captioned monochrome frontispieces, 228 captioned fine monochrome plates on limp paper (VERSOS BLANK) ALL STEEL ENGRAVINGS DONE BY GUSTAVE DORÉ, list of plates, tables of contents. German language Lutheran Protestant Bible (Old and New Testament, Apocrypha and the Song of Songs ), originally translated from Hebrew and ancient Greek into German by the cleric, originally of the Roman Catholic faith, Martin Luther and it became a force in shaping modern High German language. The beautiful monochrome plates featuring famous biblical sceneries, which include some of topographical nature (interpreted). Done by the famous 19th century French artist, engraver and sculptor Gustave Doré (1832-1883), best known for his great skill in his wood- and steel engravings, expressing a dramatic impact. Massive copy of this translation in 2 volumes. Both volumes measure 16 1/2\" x 12 3/4\" and over 2\" thick; nearly 20 lbs. each! Very Good+/Near Fine overall condition; superb and bright; light corner bumping almost no shelf wear; some very minor signs of cracking beginning to the lower portion of the leather along the rear hinge of volume I, this is just exterior and affects only the drying leather rather than the boards or hinges themselves; strong and tight bindings; sturdy and square. Text blocks are in Very Good condition with clean, crisp pages free of rips, tears, writing or markings and only moderate scattered foxing.
