Historical Background: Genre paintings - scenes of everyday life have always been a popular subject on Sevres porcelain boxes and vases. It was popular for the wealthy in mid-18th Century France to collect 17th Century paintings of peasants by the famous Flemish artist David Teniers (1610-1690) and often the Sevres porcelain painters adapted their designs from these originals placing the figures in scenic landscapes. The use of architectural designs in the paintings was also a popular subject matter.
