Great Example of an 18th, Early 19th Century \"Spit Dog\" Skewer Holder - RARE Figural Formation
One of only a handful we\'ve seen in many years, these are almost impossible to acquire out of high end private collections and museums.
\"Spit Dogs\" as there are referred to were used in early open hearth fireplaces to manage the various cooking skewers that were working to roast meats and other articles at the hearth.
Just as seen in \"Early American Antique Country Furnishings\" by Nuemann. These are usually found as single examples. The premise is that the raised back on the example would have various skewer ends rest between the ridged areas. For straight skewers they could be anchored in the holes that run the body of the piece. For larger spits and skewers the \"mouth\" of the figure or the hanging ring would accompany the skewer.
As you can see this is a zoomorphic design that resembles and animal, with a mouth, punched in eye work holding the ring and even a little curled tail end!
Truly a masterpiece of folk art formed in a functional hearthplace item.
Measures 12 1/4\" in length and stands 11 3/4\" tall.
Some expected pitting and age wear, though overall very good condition on this c. 1780-1820 piece.
