From my personal collection of local historical memorabilia... !!! Fragile silk, but in very fine condition, this age-toned ribbon would have been worn by a delegate to the W.R.C. 35th Annual Convention, held in Danville, Pennsylvania from June 12-13th in 1918. All but 100 years old, this ribbon dates to back around the end of World War I. The \"W. R. C.\" was the post-Civil WAR \"Women\'s Relief Corps\", the ladies\' auxiliary to the Union veterans\' Grand Army of the Republic. Simply woven of fragile silk, it\'salmost certain very few of thesesurvive.
Founded in 1883, the auxiliary\'s stated mission was to serveand provide aid to veteran soldiers, their families, and widows and orphans. Apparently, some descendant organizations still exist today. Online research shows a WRC Senior Services still exists in Brookville, PA. That group--withties dating back to the WRC\'s founding--erected a veterans facility in 1889, and still provides senior-living services.
This \"Delegate\" ribbon was probably worn for convention functions and parades, and measures 3 1/4\" x 8\". Dramatically darkened over the years, the original color appears to be a light gold. The central design features a red-white-and-blue inked-on image of the United States Flag flying in the breeze. The back is plain. I see no evidence of pin holes or tears, but the unfinished ends are fraying a bit. Overall condition of the silk is very stable.
