RARE 1920’s BLACK AFRICAN-AMERICAN JAZZ MUSICIANS in HAWAII Original VTG Photo 1

Up for sale is a VERY RAREoriginal vintage photo of African-Americanjazz musicians in Hawaii in the 1920’s! This was taken during a musical tour of the Hawaiian islands and these are likely members of the Los Angeles jazz and big band scene—maybe members ofDelaney’s Old Kentucky Minstrels, the Wild Cat Jazz Band, Sunnyland Jazz Orchestra, or Johnnie Mitch-Hell’s Ebony Idols?

IMPORTANT BACKGROUND INFO:

This photo is likely from 1926, when a large group of African-American musicians and performers, many from Los Angeles, traveled by boat to Hawaii for a tour of the islands and awed the locals with their lively jazz and big band music! THESE ARE THE EARLIEST PHOTOS WE HAVE EVER SEEN OF AFRICAN-AMERICANS ON THE HAWAIIAN ISLANDS— AND THEY ARE ALSO MEMBERS OF THE HISTORIC LOS ANGELES & U.S. 1920’s JAZZ SCENE— POSSIBLY THE ONLY KNOWN PHOTOS OF LEGENDARY BANDS! Some of the men in this photo are also seen in other photos from the collection this came from, playing saxophones, trumpets and trombones in front of their tour van and posing with the locals!

The following info will help paint the picture of the rare photo collection this came from: One photo from this collection shows African-American musicians as well as two men in blackface performing in front of a crowd at a tent show, the banner above them reading“OLD KENTUCKY MINSTRELS - Kings and Queens of Jazz”.The greatest attraction of the Kamehameha Carnival held Nov. 6 to13, 1926, at the Lihu‘e ballpark was Delaney’s Old Kentucky Minstrels -one of a number of African-American minstrel tent shows that toured with carnivals mostly in the American South during the teens and ‘20s. Delaney’s Old Kentucky Minstrels featured 16highly talented Black singers (including La Verne Floyd, a pianist from Los Angeles), dancers, comedians and musicians, and they presented several tent shows at the Kamehameha Carnival — the likes of which had not been seen before on Kaua‘i.

Also performing on the islands during this time was the Wild Cat Jazz Band, a six-musician jazz ensemble playing trumpet, saxophone, trombone and drums; the “Kentucky Song Bird,” La Verne Porter; the stylish male dance team of Go Paul & Stewart; the “The Black Al Jolsen,” comedian Nat De Loach; and the male and female singing and dancing duo of Ruffin & Ruffin.

Also found in this photo collection was a photo of the SUNNYLAND JAZZ ORCHESTRA (one of Los Angeles’ premier musical attractions in the mid-1920’swhich during its existence featured Papa Mutt Carey and other New Orleans expatriates working in Los Angeles, as well as Buddy Petit, Ed Garland, trumpeter James Porter, trombonist Ashford Hardie, pianist Buster Wilson, banjo player Howard Patrick, bassist Clarence Williams, and drummer Ben Borders) and a photo taken on the Hawaiian islands of a poster for JOHNNIE MITCH-HELL’S EBONY IDOLS (also from Los Angeles and included band membersTommy Smith, piano, C. Caldwell, banjo and reeds,Bud Scott banjo, guitar and violin,Willis McDaniels, drums, Albert Baker, reeds and singer, Johnny Mitch-Hell i himself tenor and sax, AshHardy, trombone, Lloyd Reese, trumpet, Crawford Brown, trumpet, andPhillips, bass.)

While we don’t know who exactly the people/musicians in this photo are, this is a rare photo of important players in the roaring Los Angeles jazz and big band scene on tour in Hawaii…many of whom may not be found in photos anywhere else—and also a rare early photo of African-Americans on the Hawaiian islands!
