The handwriting is by LIN Zexu, a Chinese scholar and official during the Qing dynasty. He\'s famous for his active fight against opium smuggling in Guangzhou, which is usually considered to be the primary catalyst for the First Opium War 1839-1842.
This is a good rare engraved Chinese inkbox with very fine vigorous calligraphy decoration of a famous Buddhist scripture and a seal mark. There is a texture to the paktong surface. The box is beautifully made and shuts to perfection! Inside the lid is a piece of glass held in place by some metal beading. The inside of the box has 2 reservoirs, stianed with ink. Signature to base.
It measures 19cm long x 7.3cm wide x 4.5cm tall. 740grams.
