EARLY AFRICAN BRONZE CASTING
BENIN, 19TH CENTURY
About 17” x 7 ½” x 6”.
Probably a symbol of the sacrosanct king known as the “onis”. Cast in the “lost wax” process. Well rendered facial features. Holds a hollow horn vessel in each hand. Raised relief neck and chest ornamentation. Wears a close fitting cap with an extended ball and shaft. Quite heavy.
From the 17th to the 19th century, modern day Benin was ruled by the Kingdom of Dahomey. This region was referred to as the Slave Coast from as early as the 17th century due to the large number of slaves shipped to the New World during the Trans-Atlantic slave trade. After slavery was abolished, France took over the country and renamed it French Dahomey. In 1960, Dahomey gained full independence from France, bringing in a democratic government for the next 12 years
Overall excellent. Some corrosion losses, particularly in the back (visible in the images). Great old surface verdigris patina. A WONDERFUL AND EARLY AFRICAN BRONZE CASTING.
