RARE ANCIENT PRE CONTACT HAWAII FIRST STAGE KAPA BEATER \"HOHOA\" - STONE CARVED!

This is a pre-contact artifact that was carved without the use of metal tools. It was masterfully carved with stone and shark teeth (you can clearly see the stone adzing work on this piece). It has fabulous form and patina from usage. Photos cannot capture the amazing quality of this tapa beater, having incredible wear and patina at the handle. Made of very rare Kauila wood. This is a textbook example of the ideal hohoa beater, don\'t let this be a missed opportunity!

  • About Hohoa (Arts and Crafts of Hawaii by Sir Peter Buck):\"The first type, termed hohoa (hoahoa), was used in the preliminary stage of beating out individual strips of bast. The hohoa, somewhat club shaped, ranged in length between 14 and 15 inches. The striking part averaged about 8 inches in length and was round, with a diameter of a little over 2 inches but with far end slightly smaller. The blade sloped gradually into the handle which diminished into a blunt point about 1 inch in diameter. The trimming down of the handle formed edges which were not smoothed off.The beating part, or blade, was quite smooth (mole) in some beaters; in others, it was grooved to form sharp parallel ridges (nap) which ranged from eight to the inch to 14 to the inch. The grooved beaters usually had a longitudinal smooth panel about 1.6 inches in width, and the rest of the circular surface had a section of course ridges and one of closer ridges. The also had a slight shoulder at the junction between blade and handle.\"
