RARE ANTIQUE AFRICAN ART DOGON HORSE WITH RIDER BRONZE CAST STATUE MALI:
$75.00

Gorgeous bronze statue of a horse and riders from the Dogon people of west Africa measuring about 5in long by 5in high with a depth of .75in. This statue is status symbol among the Dogon and is meant to bring honor to the owner\'s ancestors. The image of the horse and rider is meant to recall a Dogon warrior; the general motif of which dates back a thousand years. At that point in history Islam had begun to dominate in Mali and the ruling elites were converting many of the indigenous peoples to the Muslim faith. A process which the Dogon admittedly refused to submit to*; instead retreating to the mountains and mounting a fierce resistance. Partly because of this the Dogon were classified as dar al-harb (essentially heathens) by the Islamic elite, which allowed them to be captured and sold into slavery through North African Slave Trade. Thus the Dogon warrior was more than a mere soldier but a protector of the culture as a whole and the only thing that stood between the Dogon and utter destruction. With that in mind this statue would not only be a great addition to your African art collection but can stand to serve as a reminder to persevere in the face of overwhelming adversity.*Some historians now believe that the Dogon did not exist before this and evolved during this time from various other peoples coming together to resist conversion. Please email with any questions and please take a look at my other listings for more great deals! Thanks for Looking!
