Monkey spoons originated in the Netherlands in theseventeenth century and were hand wrought to mark a particular occasion such asa wedding, birth or funeral. This spoon is celebrate one of those events, as inthe bowl is a repoussé scene of a fisherman on the boat, two ducks on thewater, windmill and houses standing on the other side ow water way. The curvedhandle on the spoon allowed it to be hung from the rim of a punch bowl andthese spoons were cherished possessions that were passed down within a family.The boss on this spoon is in the shape of a medallion and the knop is in theform of walking man carrying round objects. Typically these spoons were madeout of 835 silver but this one has no hallmarks and it is not marked sterlingso I cannot guarantee to be sterling silver, possibly 835 silver. The spoonmeasures 4 3/8\" long (110 mm) in length, bowl is 2 1/8 inches (42 mm)across and is in excellent condition with only light signs of handmade naturethe spoon was made.
