Wreath is mounted on light purple velvet material. The frame has some issues, but nothing that wouldn\'t be expected considering this is 150+ years old. Frame is hinged and opens.This item will be packaged very carefully and insured.
Historical information about Victorian Hair ArtCreating hair art and hair wreaths was a popular Victorian parlor pastime. Hair art/wreaths personalized a family similar to a group of photographs, as family members could point to and identify the hair of various contributors. The Victorian era (19th century) was the height of sentimental hair art. Using hair of family members of various lengths and color - from children\'s curls to elderly gray - individual strands of hair were tightly wound around thin wire then fashioned into three dimensional floral, leaf and other designs. Often the created art/wreath was framed or set in a shadow box and displayed prominently in the house.Hair art is rare because many pieces were burned at the turn of the 19th century with a hysterical belief one could catch the plague from them. Hair art and wreaths are no moroffer or macabre, but a historical view of culture and the practice in the 19th century which created artwork requiring skill, time and exceptional effort.
