hard to find, Mulit-colored version of Merchant\'s Gargling oil, Victorian Trade Cards. It is a set of four cards and they date to the 1880\'sThey are very whimsical and humorous and were put out by the Merchant’s Gargling Oil Linament Co. The company was established in 1833. This set featured caricatures of baseball players in various poses. The cards, measue 3 ¼ inches by 5 ¼ inches and printed on thin stock paper. They were manufactured in Buffalo New York, and are Lithographs.The card fronts showcased humorous poses, while the backs were used for store advertising. In this case the backs are for D.H.R (davis\' Hair Renewer)which seems to cure EVERYThing from Hair falling out to Dandruft. The cards were originaly issued with blank backs, and different companies then would imprint their names on the card backs and then pass them out to customers.There are four versions of the Merchant’s Gargling Oil Linament sets (which have an H804-7 designation). Each has the same design on the card front, but vary in colors and by the company that printed them.This version is the rare and hard to find version that is A multi-color version with blue and yellow tones (H804-7B). These were printed by Courier Lithograph of BuffaloThe set is listed, in the “Baseball Advertising Trade Cards” book by Frank Keetz (which is now out of print).This sale is for Four cards from the set (there were original five). They have some toning (darkening to the paper) to them as you can see in the photos and at some point they look like they were pasted into a book so the backs have lighter spots on the corners. you can see this in the included photos.
