Raphael Kirchner (1876Vienna – 1917 New York). Austrian illustrator, portrait painter and postcard designer who worked inVienna, Paris and the USA. He studied at theVienna Academy of Fine Arts and moved to Paris in1900 where he worked for magazines such as \'La Vie Parsienne\'. In 1914 hemoved to the USA where he remained until his death in 1917.This bookplate wasdesigned for Georges Goury (1875-1959) who began working as aphysician in Nancy around 1905.

Thisunusual heliogravure is a rare turquoise version of this bookplate. GeorgesGoury apparently ordered few in this colour printed as opposed to a sepia tone alsofound. It employs the heliogravure technique; the oldest procedure forreproducing photographic images and during the early part of the 20th century andthe method of choice for reproductions appearing in high quality books and forartistic photography.
