RARE
HISTORIC CONFEDERATE RANGER HAND WRITTEN LOVE LETTER POEM
For
your consideration is this historic hand written letter from William Oliver (?) of the Confederate Rangers. The Rangers were
independent cavalry units fighting for the South; volunteers who provided their
own weapons, horses and leadership they excelled at disrupting Union lines of
communication as well as providing vital information and services to the
Confederate Army. A google search finds a William
W. Oliver who served as Fourth Corporal in the Tennessee 11 Cavalry of Rangers commanded by Captain Andrew R. Gordon; perhaps the William Oliver who wrote this
letter was the same Oliver fighting for Tennessee.
This
historic Civil War letter, written during the bleak and trying circumstances prevalent
during War, exhibits a sadness lightened with the levity which only love
produces. Certainly a love letter,
the internal rhyme of the words actually produces a love poem, the ink written
in Oliver’s 18th century hand exhibiting the flourishes and
characteristics of the time. The letter reads as follows:
“Confederate
states of A Merica
When
I and you my dear do part I shall have lasting on each heart I’ll to some grave
go making my home lie again and die as some have done. With use in each if you
will mind you will in this a question find all this and more I have to say
night comes on I cannot stay sweet is the question mind it well heart to hearts
so fare you well. Confederate Rangers William Oliver Company (K 29 - ???)”
