There is very minimal crazing that is unusual for those figurines - please refer to the pictures.
Staffordshire figures and animals were made by many different potters and factories and were rarely signed.
English pottery figural groups were made during the later part of the 18th Century. Animals however, really came into vogue during the reign of Queen Victoria (1837-1901). These \"comforters\" as they were called were an integral part of the Victorian English household. Dogs, particularly King Charles Spaniels, were especially popular.
The sharper a piece\'s molding and detailing, the more valuable it is. Collectors also pursue pieces with rich, dark colors. \"A Staffordshire man with bright green pants, a bright blue jacket and a rich black hat is the type of piece that\'s worth more,\" says David. \"The same piece that is brightly colored is worth two or three times more than one that isn\'t.\" Minister Benjamin Disraeli who served Queen Victoria as Prime Minister, was a great dandy and paid special attention to his hair, always sporting a carefully groomed central forehead curl. Consequently, the affectionate name, \"Disraeli\" has endeared itself to the model of Spaniels that have curly hair on their forehead. They were potted from simple two-piece pressmolds. Once dry, themoldswere placed together and thin rolls of clay were inserted to seal the seams inside. The next step was to make a small hole, usually on the base, so that air was able to escape during the firing process. After the first firing, the figures were painted with underglaze colors and then dipped into a liquid glaze . Once this process was completed, the figures were then painted with enamel, overglaze, colors and any gilding required and then fired a final time. Due to the deposits of clay left in themolds, the averagemold\'slife would not last for more than 100 figures without severe loss of quality. This is one way to tell the age of the figure, the cleaner and crisper, the earlier it was produced in the mold\'s life. The more often the mold was used, the less the quality of the figure produced.
