DescriptionSTRAIGHT FROM AL OLD COLLECTION THIS IS ONE OF THE EARLIEST NEW ENGLAND WILLIAM AND MARY TABLE CUPBOARDS WE HAVE SEEN IN MANY YEARS. THIS GREAT PIECE WAS ORIGINALLY FOUND OUT ON CAPE COD, MA IN THE EARLY 1940\'S AT A LOCAL ESTATE sale.
A FANTASTIC LATE 17TH OR VERY EARLY 18TH CENTURY AMERICAN TABLE CUPBOARD IN OLD GROWTH EasterN WHITE PINE IN THE BEST ORIGINAL OLD GRUNGY BARN RED PAINTED SURFACE AND GREAT OLD PATINA. IT HAS A FULLY DOVETAILED CASE, APPLIED TOP AND BOTTOM MOLDINGS AND SET IN ORIGINAL HAND WROUGHT IRON HINGES. New England, Probably Massachusetts, Circa 1700-1730.
A FANTASTIC EARLY TABLE CUPBOARD IN THE BEST ORIGINAL RED PAINT.
VERY SIMPLE IN DESIGN BUT WITH GREAT CONSTRUCTION ELEMENTS. EARLY, WIDE HAND CUT DOVETAILS ON THE CASE. THE APPLIED TOP AND BOTTOM MOLDINGS ARE ALL INTACT AND OF VERY EARLY FORM. THE ORIGINAL HAND WROUGHT IRON HINGES STILL RETAIN MANY OF THE ORIGINAL ROSE-HEAD NAILS. THE HINGES ARE INSET INTO THE PIECE, A VERY EARLY FEATURE.
THE NAILS ARE ALL ORIGINAL. THE ROSE HEADS ARE THE SIZE OF DIMES.
IT ALSO STILL RETAINS ITS ORIGINAL HAND WROUGHT IRON LOCK.
IT STILL RETAINS ITS ORIGINAL FLOATING INTERIOR SHELF AND EVEN THE SHELF HOLDERS HAVE HUGE ROSE HEAD NAILS.
THE ORIGINAL RED PAINT ON THIS CUPBOARD IS FANTASTIC. THE COLOR IS MUCH BETTER IN PERSON THAN THE PHOTOS SHOW.
THE RED PAINT IS ALL ORIGINAL, GRUNGY AND WELL OXIDIZED.
All the backboards are original.
THESE RARE SMALL CUPBOARDS WERE MADE TO BE PLACED ON TOP OF A TABLE OR CHEST. THERE WERE USUALLY EQUIPPED WITH A LOCK AND WERE USED TO STORE MONEY AND VALUABLES.
The size is fantastic being only 15 1/2\" tall, 11 1/2\" wide and 8 1/2\" deep.
The wood is early growth Eastern White Pine.
Minor damages and losses to the paint as seen. There is the typical old (BUT INACTIVE) bug losses (from being out on the Cape for 300 years). Also, the brass escutcheon on the door is a later 19th century addition as are a couple of the screws in the lock. The present added iron hangers on the back are new and were added by the collector to hang the piece on the wall.
